Conduct a Free Texas Probation Search (Access Records)

Free Texas Probation Search
Find out if someone you know or love is on probation in Texas, free of charge.

Perform a free Texas probation search to conveniently identify those under community supervision.

Unlike parole, which involves early release from prison, probation often replaces or shortens jail time. With the right information, it’s possible to identify those on probation in Texas at little or no cost. This resource outlines the more efficient and effective options available for locating individuals on probation and, to a lesser extent, those on parole throughout the state of Texas.

How To Execute a Texas Probation Search

Access to public records is an important right in Texas, providing government transparency to its citizens. This includes availability to numerous court records, such as criminal and civil court cases.

Texas does not offer a specific search tool for searching probation records, thus, these records can be obtained from several custodians. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) offers an Inmates Information Search Tool that may be utilized to acquire criminal records from various facilities in the state.1

Records can be searched by providing the inmate’s last name, first name, TDCJ no., SID number, gender and race.

As another approach, searchers may also contact the Department of Public Safety at:

Texas Board of Criminal Justice
PO Box 13084
Austin, Texas 78711

Phone: 512.475.3250
Fax: 512.305.9398

Court records pertaining to criminal (and civil) cases are accessible via the Texas Judicial Branch Case Search Tool. This free tool for Texas community supervision searches requires a complete or partial case number for use. It’s possible to review the basic records, as well as the sentence issued by a judge.

The results pull up information including the date filed, the case type, the individual’s full name and a brief summary of case events. It also includes a calendar of future court dates and details of the judge, court and county presiding over the case. The sentence (referred to as “Punishment” on the results) may include details about probation supervision.

Additionally, the Texas Department of Public Safety hosts a Criminal History Conviction Name Search Online Tool, which allows searchers to identify individuals convicted or in receipt of deferred adjudication by name, but it requires users to register and pay a fee of $3 per name plus a potential processing fee based on payment method.

This tool is quite thorough, including information about arrests, prosecutions and dispositions (including whether an individual has been sentenced to probation) for class B misdemeanors or greater. Information within this database is sourced from the Department of Public Safety Computerized Criminal History System.

Because there’s a fee associated with each search, it’s recommended to make the search parameters as specific as possible. While only a first and last name are required to perform a search, other search fields include middle or maiden name and a complete or partial birth date.
Requesters may also consider reaching out the Texas Department of Public Safety by phone 512.424.2000 or visiting in person at:2

Search Texas Probationers via County & City Agencies in Texas

At the county and city levels, probation records are typically located through the district and county courts. To complete a Texas community supervision search, district or county records for the relevant location are often the best place to start.

However, many of them require individuals to know the case number. Below are details about locating these records within the most populous areas in the state.

Harris County: When looking for probation information in Harris County, Texas, the Community Supervision & Corrections Department (CSCD) is a good option to start. This is considered as the third largest probation department in the United states. To request for records of someone under supervision or former inmates in CSCD, send an email at [email protected].

More information can be acquired by visiting the department’s FAQ page.

Another option for public criminal records requests is through the Harris County District Clerk website. To access the electronic records database, a searcher must create a free account.

Having an account grants access to several files, including public criminal records. Some files may not be available for free through this method, and individuals may have to pay a nominal fee.

Searchers can follow this procedure to find records:

  • Log into the system.
  • Select a criminal search.
  • Queries can be made using a case number or name of the offender.
  • Narrow the search with a date of filing range and the offense type.
  • Searchers can also select case and defendant status.
  • In the defendant status drop-down menu, select probation.

For information not available online, contacting the district court directly may yield results.

To use this tool, enter the last and first name of the individual. Partial names are acceptable, though it may require some extra time to identify the correct individual if they have a common name or if using partial matches.

How To Check a Probation Violation in Texas & Contact Someone’s Supervision Officer

Sometimes, it’s important to contact an individual’s probation officer, for example, if there are concerns of the probationer violating the terms of their supervision.

Completing a Texas community supervision search can help by narrowing down the area where an individual may be supervised. Several databases offer status information, including potential violations. However, no one tool can be used to identify a probation officer supervising an individual.

In these cases, contacting the corresponding probation department is often the best way to ensure a message is forwarded to the correct officer. As Texas is such a large and populous state, there are several community supervision offices.

Review the Community Supervision & Corrections Department Directory for the State of Texas for relevant contact information of various offices across the state.7 It includes addresses, phone numbers and fax numbers for individual probation offices, organized by county.

Each county may also have several smaller locations or units within it. For example, in Dallas County, there are 10 Community Supervision & Correction Offices in various places.8

It may take some bouncing around or calling several offices to locate the correct one for the offender in question. The most likely county overseeing probation for an individual is that of their place of residence.

How To Find Parolees in Texas

By and large, the same tools utilized and recommended in previous sections of this article will also reveal parole information. The Texas Judicial Branch Case Search and the Criminal History Conviction Name Search will both provide this information if it’s available.9 Likewise, parole information may be available on county or district court websites, as detailed in how to search for information about probation.

In Texas, the Parole Division oversees those released from prison to serve the remainder of their sentences under community supervision. It may be able to provide information on individual parolees. The central division can be contacted at:

Texas Department of Criminal Justice
Parole Division
8610 Shoal Creek Boulevard
P.O. Box 13401, Capitol Station
Austin, Texas 78711

Phone: (512) 406-5250

It may be more helpful to narrow down the search for a parolee to a specific region. In Texas, the Parole Division divides the state into five regions.10 Select the corresponding region for the city in which the parolee is believed to be located and contact the offices directly to reach an individual’s parole officer:

Allowing for simple Texas probation searches and access to criminal records is an integral part of community safety, ensuring the public remains informed and aware of those in their vicinity who may be problematic.
